A murder investigation is under way into the death of a man in Limerick late on Saturday night.

Patrick O'Connor was stabbed at Fitzgerald's pub on Sexton Street in Thomondgate at around midnight on Saturday.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that the 24-year-old died from stab wounds.

A man in his 40s was arrested earlier today and is still being questioned at Henry Street Garda Station.

Fitzgerald's pub remains sealed off as part of the murder investigation.

The management paid tribute to the dead man and sympathised with his family, adding they were "very fond of him at Fitzgerald's" and were devastated by his death.

They reiterated the call to the community to help gardaí with their investigation.

Deirdre Cusack, Principal of the Salesians Infant School where Mr O'Connor was a past pupil, described him as a "lovely chap from a lovely family".
