A man in his 80s, who was injured in a fire at his home in Co Clare yesterday evening, has died.

The man's son, who is in his 40s, sustained burn injuries when he went to help his father and is in a stable condition in hospital.

The incident happened at Meelick shortly after 5pm.

The older man was conscious at the scene when emergency services arrived.

They requested assistance from the Coast Guard helicopter based in Shannon and the Air Corps air ambulance based in Athlone.

It is understood that the man was put in an induced coma at the scene by a Critical Care Retrieval Physician, who is based at Cork University Hospital and volunteering with the air ambulance crew.

The injured man was airlifted to CUH, but died early this morning.

His son was also airlifted separately to CUH and is being treated in the burns unit there.
