A man in his late 70s and a woman in her 60s have died in two separate car crashes in Mayo and Cork city.

The man died after a car struck a gate post in Mayfield, Cork city this morning.

It happened on the Ballyhooly Road at the junction with Gordon's Hill, at 8.15am.

The man was a passenger in the car.

A woman in her 70s who was driving the car was taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.

In Co Mayo, a woman died after a two-car collision on the N5 Westport Road outside Castlebar at around 8.30am.

She was taken to Mayo University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A man in his 30s, who was in the second car, was taken to hospital and is understood to have suffered minor injuries.

A section of the N5 road was closed but has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information about either incident to contact them.
