A 43-year-old man is in custody after he entered a garda station in Cork armed with a hammer and two knives.

The man was described as being in a distressed state when he went to Mayfield Garda Station this afternoon and broke the windows and mirrors of a patrol van with the hammer.

The van was parked in a compound at the rear of the garda station.

The man then entered the garda station and threatened two gardaí.

The officers spent more than 15 minutes talking to the man before he agreed to hand over the weapons.

The man, who is from the area, was detained in connection with the weapons and in relation to the criminal damage to the patrol van.
