More than 10 million cigarettes with an estimated retail value of €7.9 million have been seized during a routine search at Rosslare Port yesterday.

The illegal cigarettes, branded 'Richmond King Size', were discovered by Revenue when officers stopped and searched an unaccompanied trailer that had arrived on a ferry from Zeebrugge, Belgium.

In a statement this morning, Revenue said the find represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of almost €6.2 million and that investigations are ongoing.

This seizure is part of the organisation's ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.
