A man in his 80s has died following a motorway crash which happened after seven o'clock this morning.

It involved three vehicles and occurred on the M9 between junctions 4 and 5 near Castledermot, close to the Kildare-Carlow border.

One driver, a man in his early 80s, was removed to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny in a serious condition and has since died.

Another man, aged in his 30s, was airlifted to hospital from the scene with serious injuries.

A third driver, a woman in her 20s, was brought to hospital in Kilkenny with injuries described by gardaí as "non-life threatening".

Traffic diversions were put in place at the location, the southbound carriageway near Castledermot, which closed for a number of hours. The northbound carriageway was also closed for some time.

Both carriageways have since reopened following the completion of a forensic examination of the scene.
