A man in his 60s has been charged with the murder of 83-year-old John Brogan at his home in Pheasant Hill outside Castlebar in Co Mayo last Sunday.
Kevin McHale, with an address at Annagh in Castlebar, appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon shortly before 12.30pm.
Detective Sergeant Michael Doherty gave evidence of arresting the accused at 11.12am and charging him at 11.43am.
Mr McHale made no reply to the charge after caution.
He was remanded in custody to appear again at Harristown District Court on Friday.

Solicitor for the accused, Gary Mulchrone, said there was no application for bail in light of the seriousness of the charges.
He applied for legal aid for Mr McHale pointing out he was in receipt of social welfare payments.
Mr Mulchrone also requested a medical assessment to include psychiatric intervention if required.
