A woman in her 20s has died and a man has been arrested following an assault in Co Meath in the early hours of this morning.

The woman was found unresponsive by gardaí in a house in the Rathmore area of Athboy.

She has been named locally as 27-year-old Larisa Serban.

RTÉ News understands she had sustained stab wounds.

National Ambulance Service personnel also attended the scene and the woman was declared dead at the scene.

Her body has been removed from the scene, which was preserved for forensic and technical examination.

The office of the State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau have been notified and a post-mortem examination will take place.

A man aged in his 30s has been arrested at a different location and is currently being detained in Ashbourne Garda Station.

An incident room has been established at Kells Garda Station.
