The Government is working on proposals to potentially lower the cost of public transport and childcare, the Tánaiste has indicated to the Dáil.

Leo Varadkar said many rising costs are out of the control of the Government but it is looking at the areas of public transport and childcare.

He said people are facing a cost of living crisis and Government had so far provided €2.4 billion in relief to help households address the cost of living crisis.

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty said rising rents and high childcare costs are within the control of Government and low and middle income households need help.

"The most vulnerable are faced with choices ... to eat or heat their homes," he told the Dáil.

The Donegal TD said workers need the Government to take action and introduce further measures particularly for those on fixed incomes.
