Spanish police have released video footage of the moment that Gerard Hutch, known as 'The Monk', was arrested in Spain on foot of a European Arrest Warrant.

The 58-year old was arrested inside a restaurant in Fuengirola last Thursday.

The video footage, released by Spain's Guardia Civil, shows four plain clothes police officers approach a table in the centre of the restaurant where Mr Hutch is sitting with a woman.

Mr Hutch is holding a menu and wearing a Covid-19 face covering when the police officers approach.

He is then escorted by the officers past other diners to another section of the restaurant where personal documentation is checked.

The video footage also shows that a member of An Garda Síochána is present, wearing a clearly visible garda jacket. A uniformed member of La Guardia Civil is also shown in the footage.

Wearing a dark green t-shirt and black shorts, Mr Hutch is then brought by Spanish police officers back through the restaurant and to a waiting car where he is placed in the back seat.

Mr Hutch's extradition is being sought by gardaí at Ballymun Garda Station, who are investigating the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in Dublin in February 2016.

Mr Byrne, a 34-year-old Kinahan organised crime group member, was shot dead at a boxing weigh-in by a gang of armed men dressed as gardaí.

A file on the case was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who then applied to the High Court for a European Arrest Warrant for Mr Hutch.

Mr Hutch appeared at a court in Madrid over the weekend and has been further remanded in custody pending another court appearance.
