A woman in her early 60s is in a critical condition after she was stabbed a number of times at her home in west Cork.
A 30-year-old man has been arrested.
It is understood he is known to the injured woman.
The incident happened at Ballycoughlin, a townland around 3km from the village of Innishannon, at around 1.30pm.
The woman was found at her home by a family member who raised the alarm.
The woman received medical attention at the scene and was then taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she is currently in a critical condition.
A man was arrested in Innishannon a short time later and is being held at Bandon Garda Station.
It is understood that he is being medically assessed.
The woman's home will remain sealed off overnight and gardaí are expected to carry out a technical examination.
