The Office of the Attorney General is advising people to be alert for scam phone calls claiming to be from an official from the office and possibly displaying its phone number (01 6314000).

The caller makes a range of claims, including that the person they are contacting has been a victim of fraud or identity theft where their identity has been used for drug trafficking or money laundering.

The caller may also claim that there is a case against the person and a warrant out for their arrest.

They can also ask for personal details, which may include PPS numbers and/or bank details.

The Office of the Attorney General says it does not request PPS numbers or bank account details from members of the public.

It is urging people not to engage with these callers, return calls to them, or share any personal information with them, and to report the matter to gardaí.

The alert comes days after the Department of Social Protection issued a warning about scam phone calls from people claiming to be department officials.
