A man and a woman in their 20s have been killed in a road crash near Slane in Co Meath.

It happened on the N51 Navan to Slane road at around one o'clock this afternoon.

Gardaí say the car which was travelling from Slane to Navan collided with a lorry.

It is understood the man, who was 23 and was the driver of the car, was from Northern Ireland.

The female passenger, who was 21, is believed to have been from the local area.

Their bodies were taken to Our Lady's Hospital, Navan where post mortems are due to be carried out.

The driver of the lorry, who is a 31-year-old man, was uninjured and he was arrested at the scene and taken to Navan Garda Station where he was later released.

The road remains closed and local diversions are in place while the scene is forensically examined.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them and they are particularly interested in drivers with dashcam footage who were travelling on the N51 between Navan and Slane between 12.30pm and 1.15pm.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Navan Garda Station on 046 9079930, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
