There was rise in the number of applications for Irish passports between 1 January and 11 February this year, compared to the same period last year.

Figures show that during the first six weeks of 2018, 73,894 passports were issued.

That figure has risen to to 93,301 in the same period this year.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, 7,519 people applied for passports from Northern Ireland in 2018.

This year there were 10,833 applications.

The number of passports issued to people who applied from Britain rose by over 3,000 this year from 7,076 to 10,833.

The figures reinforce the demand for Irish passports in recent years following the UK’s Brexit referendum.
