An investigation is under way following an armed robbery on a cash-in-transit van outside a Bank of Ireland branch in Dunboyne, Co Meath, yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí say that a man, who was armed with what is believed to be a firearm, threatened a member of the cash-in-transit staff team before escaping with a box containing an undisclosed sum of money just before 3pm.

He fled the scene in a waiting van driven by a second person.

The silver Ford Focus van, with a 05-MH registration, was found on fire in the grounds of Dunboyne Castle Hotel a short time later.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity around Dunboyne or the grounds of Dunboyne Castle before or after the robbery to contact Dunboyne Garda Station at 01-8010600, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666111 or any garda station.
