A three-year-old boy has died following a stabbing incident in the Kimmage area of Dublin.

A woman in her 40s, believed to be the child's mother, has been taken to St James's Hospital and is being treated for stab injuries.

Her condition is described as serious.

The child was found when gardaí were called to a house in the Poddle Park area at around 7pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The scene has been preserved for an examination and the State Pathologist has been notified.

An investigation is under way and gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
