A search is continuing in Canada for a 26-year-old Irishman who went missing while swimming with friends on Friday.

He has been named locally as David Gavin from Castlebar, Co Mayo, and is believed to have moved to Canada a few months ago for work.

It is understood Mr Gavin, who plays Gaelic football with Breaffy, had been diving in a river in the Beaver Creek area, which is around 260km west of Calgary in the Canadian Rockies.

The alarm was raised when he failed to surface.

In a statement, the family of Mr Gavin said that they have arrived in Canada, and are being provided consular assistance by the Embassy of Ireland in Ottawa.

Mr Gavin's family has also requested for privacy.
