The Department of Education has reiterated that a promised full review of its Design and Build programme for schools will not take place until legal proceedings that it is taking against one building company have completed.

The department has commenced a number of actions against Western Building Systems following the discovery of serious structural flaws in the more than 40 school buildings constructed by the company in recent years.

The department has announced that a smaller study, which will gather information on practice in other countries, will be carried out in the meantime by Technological University of Dublin.

It says this report will involve a "desktop review of relevant available reports on the subject and other sources of information", and will be finalised by the end of the year.

A tendering process for this initial review was carried out over the summer.

Western Building Systems has criticised what they say is the Minister for Education's failure to undertake the review that he promised.
