Two men in their 20s were arrested by gardaí after 4.4kg of herbal cannabis worth €88,000 was seized at Dublin Port over the weekend.

The drugs were discovered when an Irish-registered car that had arrived from Holyhead on Saturday was stopped and searched by Revenue officers.

The men were detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at Store Street Garda Station.

In a separate operation yesterday, Revenue officers seized 150kg of chewing tobacco with an estimated value of €82,500, at Dublin Airport.

The chewing tobacco, branded 'Makla', was discovered with the assistance of detector dog Gus, concealed in an air cargo consignment that originated in Belgium destined for an address in Dublin's south city area.

Revenue said both seizures are part of ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and smuggling.

Businesses or members of the public with any information regarding smuggling are being asked to contact Revenue in confidence on the confidential phone number 1800 295 295.
