Tributes have been paid to a homeless man who was known to sleep on the UCD campus in Dublin.

Michael Byrne, who was known as Old Man Belfield, was found dead on the campus shortly after midday on Monday.

Gardaí said the 71-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene

His body was removed to Dublin City Morgue where a post-mortem examination is to be carried out.

The college confirmed Mr Byrne's death on Twitter.

It said: "Michael Byrne, affectionately known as "Old Man Belfield" by students and staff, sadly passed away on Monday 11 January 2021.

"A fiercely private person, we thank those of you who quietly looked out for Michael.

"We will miss him around the campus. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Mr Byrne was well known to staff and students, with many sharing their memories of him on social media.

Professor Niamh Brennan said: "I will miss Michael on my morning walks to work.

"He was a distinguished member of the UCD community, contributing so positively to our vibrant campus."

Associate professor Aidan Regan said he "would love to see a mural of him somewhere on campus".
