Gardaí have said they will investigate the organisation of a protest against Covid-19 restrictions.

Yesterday's protest started on Custom House Quay in Dublin and later marched to Grafton Street where demonstrators chanted "Take off your masks" at shoppers and then staged a sit down protest on the street.

Around 400 to 500 people attended the protest at Custom House Quay and hundreds then marched over to Grafton Street.

In a statement, the Garda Press Office said gardaí have no role in permitting or authorising protest marches and no authorisation is required for such events.

But it added that Covid restrictions under regulations of the 1947 Health Act (as amended) are currently in force and there are penal restrictions on people who organise certain events.

It added: "Individual attendance, social distancing, wearing of masks in public area and other such public health guidelines are not penal regulations."
