A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Dublin.

The victim died after he was attacked in a laneway off Madison Road in Kilmainham in the early hours of yesterday.

The man who was in his 40s was beaten to death.

The boy was brought by gardaí from Kevin Street Garda Station before Dublin's Children's Court this morning.

Det Sgt Brian Hoey gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that he arrested the boy at 2.34am this morning and he made no reply when he was charged at Kevin Street Garda station with the murder.

Defence solicitor Wayne Kenny told the court he had great concern for the boy's mental health and the judge agreed to his application for a medical and psychiatric assessment in custody.

Judge Treasa Kelly also directed that nothing be reported that could in any way identify the boy.

Gardaí also asked that the victim not be named because they were still trying to verify his identity.

As the boy is facing a murder charge, the judge said bail was not an option and she remanded him to Oberstown Detention Centre to appear again before the Children's Court next week.
