New plans for a plaza on Dublin's College Green will be drawn up by the end of the year according to the City Council.
Today was the first of three 'Summer Sundays' during which traffic is blocked off from the area with public transport confined to a North/South route in front of Trinity College.
Brendan O'Brien, the Council's Head of Technical Services, said it remains an ambition of the Council to put in a pedestrian plaza at College Green.
Mr O'Brien said network changes under the Bus Connects scheme are due to be published in September and the Council will be studying them before drawing up a new plaza scheme.
A previous plan to pedestrianise the area was rejected by An Bord Pleanála last October largely because of the effect it would have on bus services.
The first traffic-free Sunday featured art classes run by the Hugh Lane Gallery among a number of activities.
However Cllr Patrick Costello (Green Party) criticised the use of crowd-control barriers which he said limited access.
The City Council said the barriers were required as safety measures.
