Talks are under way between multi-denominational patron body Educate Together and City of Dublin Education and Training Board (ETB) with a view to transforming two existing second level schools in the capital into multi-denominational schools.
The schools - Cabra Community College in Dublin 7 and St Kevin's College in Dublin 12 - are currently run by the ETB.
The talks are aimed at bringing Educate Together in as a partner to run the schools. This would mean that the schools would adopt a multi-denominational ethos.
The Minister for Education has written to parents campaigning in Dublin 8 and 12 for multi-denominational second level school provision. There is currently no multi-denominational second level school in the area.
It is understood that in his letter, Joe McHugh says he is supportive of the initiative involving the two existing schools, which provides an opportunity to significantly increase diversity in areas where no new school is required.
The letter reiterates the Department of Education's stance that there is currently sufficient capacity in existing schools in the Dublin 8 and 12 areas to accommodate demand.
However parents campaigning for a new school complain that the only choice available to them in the area is religious ethos schools.
