A parish priest in south Dublin has stood aside from his duties while historical allegations are investigated.

A spokesman for Archbishop Diarmuid Martin told parishioners at masses in the parish this morning that the accusation against the priest relates to several decades ago.

There is no connection with his work in his current parish.

In a statement, the Archdiocese of Dublin said the priest stood aside voluntarily in line with church policy on safeguarding children.

The statement added that "standing aside does not imply the truth or falsehood of what is being investigated. It allows an appropriate investigation by relevant Church and State authorities to take place".
