Five firearms and a quantity of ammunition have been seized in north Dublin this afternoon.

Gardai in Coolock were operating a checkpoint on the Greencastle Road when they saw a car coming towards them and recognised the driver.

They flagged the car down but it failed to stop and they pursued it until it crashed at Priorswood Road.

The driver got out and ran carrying a bag.

He was chased as far as Ferrycarrig Park where he threw the bag away.

Gardaí opened it and found five firearms - one sub-machine gun and four handguns - as well as ammunition.

The suspect got away but is known to gardaí and searches are continuing.

The car has been seized and the guns have been sent to the ballistics section in Garda headquarters.
