Dublin city councillors have vowed to block plans to sell the last remaining Magdalene Laundry building to a hotel chain.
Plans to sell the building on Sean McDermott St to the Toyoko Inn Group for over €14 million were revealed to local councillors last week.
The hotel chain plans to build a 351 bed hotel, along with a 140-bed student accommodation facility, but only six units of social housing.
The consent of councillors is required to sell council property and local representative Cllr Nial Ring says this will not be forthcoming.
Cllr Ring wants the building to be used as a sheltered community for older people that would allow them to downsize and free up under-occupied houses.
Local councillors also want a memorial to women who worked in the original laundry on the site.
