A convicted paedophile has been arrested and questioned in connection with the alleged sexual exploitation of children in Ireland and the Far East.

The man has previously served a prison sentence for child sex offences abroad and is a registered sex offender here.

The Garda National Protective Services Bureau and the Garda Cyber Crime Unit have been investigating his activities for two years.

The man, who is in his late 50s, was arrested at a house in Dublin early yesterday morning and taken to a Dublin garda station.

He was questioned until late last night about suspected offences, including possession of child abuse images, before being released.

Garda Headquarters confirmed that a man had been arrested on suspicion of committing offences under the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998.

A file will be sent to the Directors of Public Prosecutions.
