A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of 34-year-old Marie Tierney in 1984 in Kilkenny.

The man, who is in his 70s, was arrested this morning.

Ms Tierney, a mother of two young children, was reported missing on 22 October 1984 having left her home in her car the night before.

The car was located on 22 October at Newpark Fenn, Kilkenny.

A comprehensive search was carried out by investigating gardaí and Ms Tierney's body was discovered on Bleach Road, Kilkenny, on 21 December 1984.

The murder investigation at that time failed to establish who was responsible for her death.

The man who was arrested today is being held at Kilkenny Garda Station.

Ms Tierney's body was exhumed in November 2018 as part of the murder investigation.

Gardaí reopened the case in 2017, and in 2018 they evaluated a significant amount of evidence generated from fresh appeals, leading to the victim's exhumation.

It was deemed necessary in order to obtain a DNA profile of Ms Tierney to meet today's forensic standards, and also to try to glean more information about the circumstances of her murder.

A full garda team has been working on the case at Kilkenny Garda Station.
