A Belfast man has been charged with abducting and murdering a man who was found dead in Co Louth 14 years ago.

Stephen Dempsey, 50, was accused of the murder of Thomas Lockard, 34, who disappeared from his home in south Belfast in April 1998.

His body was discovered two days later by the roadside near Dundalk. He had been beaten and stabbed to death.

Mr Dempsey spoke only to confirm that he understood the charges against him. He was remanded in custody.

He was one of two people arrested on Tuesday as part of an investigation in which the PSNI and gardaí are working closely together.

A 52-year-old man has been released pending a report to Northern Ireland's Public Prosecution Service.
