A 33-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man who died in a fire almost 14 years ago.

Gerry Nolan, 44, was found dead in his mobile home at Deerpark, Castlecomer in Co Kilkenny, in the early hours of 24 July 2006.

The inquiry into his death was upgraded to a murder investigation in 2014.

This morning, detectives arrested and charged Martin Kelly, of 21 Church Avenue, Castlecomer, with Mr Nolan's murder. He was brought before Carlow District Court.

Detective Garda Michael Corcoran said he charged the accused at 10.35am. There was no reply to the charge.

The State applied for a remand in custody. Judge Geraldine Carthy accepted the request, remanding Mr Kelly to the Midlands Prison, to appear at Kilkenny District Court next Monday.
