A retired surgeon accused of indecently assaulting teenage boys has been found not guilty on four of seven counts by majority verdict.

The jury has not yet reached a decision on three further counts and is still deliberating.

Michael Shine denies groping the patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and at his private clinic, both in Drogheda, between 1964 and 1976.

After four hours and 20 minutes of deliberations at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the jury returned with the partial verdicts.

The jury foreman said they were "relatively entrenched" on the remaining counts.

Earlier today, Judge Cormac Quinn told the jury he would accept a majority verdict from ten of the 12 members.

Mr Shine, 85, of Wellington Road, Dublin 4 faced seven counts of indecently assaulting five patients.

One charge in relation to another complainant has been withdrawn.

The jury has retired for the evening and will resume deliberations again tomorrow morning.
