A jury at the Central Criminal Court in Castlebar, Co Mayo, has returned a manslaughter verdict in the trial of a youth accused of murdering another teenager prior to Christmas 2015.

The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had denied murdering 17-year-old Dovydas Jenkas in the early hours of 19 December 2015 at a house in Claremorris, Co Mayo.

The victim, a Lithuanian national, died from a single stab wound he sustained in the garden of a house after being chased around a trampoline by his attacker who was wielding a homemade knife.

The accused denied murder, telling gardaí the death was accidental and that he was carrying the knife to scare his victim.

After deliberating for a total of two hours and six minutes, the 12-person jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the murder charge but guilty of manslaughter.

The accused is to remain on bail until his sentencing in October.
