A new indoor drive-through Covid-19 testing centre with the ability to cater for up to 1,000 tests a day has opened in Limerick.

The HSE said the new testing facility on the old Wickes site at East Point Retail park on the Ballysimon Road is part of its drive to improve accessibility for testing in local communities.

It will be opened from 8am-8pm daily for people referred for testing by their GPs.

It will have ten bays and can carry out up to 1,000 tests a day if demand requires.

Two testing locations located at the Gaelic Grounds on the Ennis Road side of the city, which was set up at the start of the pandemic, and the testing bay established recently at the St Joseph's Hospital Campus on Mulgrave Street have now been closed.

HSE Mid West Community Healthcare Chief Officer Maria Bridgeman said the new testing centre is an indoor facility, which she said was very much welcomed during difficult weather at this time of year.

She urged those offered tests to attend for them.
