A sparsely populated rural electoral district in Co Monaghan has the highest concentration of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country, despite having recorded just one additional case between June and August this year.
The district is Crossalare, located about 12 kilometres due south of Castleblayney.
It includes Castleross Retirement Village and Nursing home, which is known to have suffered a significant outbreak of the virus earlier in the year.
The latest data published on the official Covid-19 data hub shows 756 people lived in Crossalare at the time of the last census, and there had been 83 confirmed Covid-19 infections in the district up to the middle of August.
This translates into a disease incidence of 10,979 per 100,000 of population, the highest incidence out of the 3,409 electoral districts in the country.
The second highest concentration of cases has been recorded in the Lucan North electoral district in west County Dublin.
There, 128 Covid-19 infections have been confirmed among its population of 1,436 people. This translates into a disease incidence of 8,913 cases per 100,000 people.
Athleague West in Co Roscommon, an electoral district about 10km south of Roscommon town, recorded the third highest incidence of Covid-19.
It has a population of 536 people, but 47 cases of coronavirus infection have so far been confirmed in the district, equating to a disease incidence of 8,768 cases per 100,000 people.
A Kepak meat processing plant is located in Athleague.
The official data hub notes that in some situations, the location of confirmed Covid-19 cases reflects a place of employment rather than a home address.
To date there have been 44 notified outbreaks or clusters of Covid-19 in food and beverage related industries.
The area with the fourth highest incidence of Covid-19 in the state is the Rathoran electoral district, close to Leighlinbridge in Co Carlow. A total of 445 people live in this district.
The 38 cases of the virus that have been confirmed there equates to an incidence rate of 8,539 cases per 100,000 people.
The fifth highest incidence of Covid-19 is Killeely electoral district in Co Clare.
Although this district - which includes the Meelick area - is just over the border in Clare, it is also very close to Limerick city.
According to the census of population a total of 793 people reside here.
The 57 cases of Covid-19 that have been confirmed in Killeely is equivalent to 7,188 cases per 100,000 people.
