An investigation is under way into the circumstances surrounding the death of an elderly female patient at University Hospital Galway last month, the Saolta University Healthcare Group has confirmed.
It follows a complaint by her family to the hospital over the circumstances in which she reportedly suffered a broken hip in the emergency department, arising from an alleged incident involving another patient.
According to details of the case reported today by the Galway City Tribune, the 74-year-old woman died some days after her hip injury, which occurred after she fell on the floor from her trolley, after an encounter with another patient.
Gardaí have confirmed they are also investigating the death. They said all circumstances surrounding the woman's "sudden death" are being investigated.
An inquest is also expected to be held.
In a statement, the Saolta Group said it could not comment publicly on individual cases.
It said it was aware of the complaint and was investigating it.
"Where families have questions or concerns in relation to any element of the care provided we deal with those families directly," it added.
