A life jacket and helmet believed to be from the crashed Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 have been found off Achill Island.

Gardaí have confirmed that the items were found by fishermen around one nautical mile from the island last Thursday.

The items have been handed over to gardaí as part of the continuing investigation.

The Sikorsky helicopter crashed into Blackrock Island, off the Co Mayo coast, on 14 March 2017.

The bodies of two of the crew members - Captain Dara Fitzpatrick and Captain Mark Duffy - were recovered in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The bodies of their colleagues, Winch Operator Paul Ormsby and Winchman Ciarán Smith, have not been found.
