People Before Profit is promising a "radical overhaul" of the childcare system with an immediate investment of €800m.

Launching its childcare policy in Dublin this afternoon, the party said the money would come from a wealth tax, vulture funds, big corporations and general taxation.

Candidates Bríd Smith and Gillian Brien pledged to extend the Early Childhood Education Scheme to include two year olds and to increase the hours to 33 per week. It says this will cost €495m.

PBP also wants to pay workers in the sector properly and move towards a publicly funded childcare system which would eventually integrate private care into it.

Bríd Smith and Gillian Brien called on voters to "swing left" on Saturday.
