Over  337,400 private sector workers are now having their wages subsidised by the state through the government's Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme, according to  the latest figures from the Revenue Commissioners who administer the scheme.

Subsidies totalling 430 million have already been paid out to 35,200 employers, though that figure includes €36 million in income tax refunds due.

In total, 48,100 employers have registered for the scheme, which is available to employers who maintain employees on the payroll throughout the pandemic.

It's hoped that retaining the link between employers and their employees will make it easier and quicker to get businesses up and running again when the current crisis ends.

The 12 week wage subsidy scheme commenced on March  26.
