Bewley's relationship with Nicaragua was endorsed today when its procurement director Paul O'Toole was formally appointed Honorary Consul of Nicaragua in Ireland.

A third of Bewley's coffee is produced in Nicaragua and the company has worked with the coffee growing community Soppexcca in the country's northern highlands for seven years.

In the past three years Bewley's has awarded supply contracts worth more than €2.5m to Soppexcca.

Two years ago $10,000 raised by Irish consumers, through Bewleys, was used to build new facilities at the milling plant in Jinotega.

Mr O'Toole's appointment was made in recognition of Bewley’s long standing ethical trading relationship and its commitment to the sustainability of coffee producing communities in Nicaragua.
