RTÉ has announced that its Director General Cathal Goan is to step down having served his full seven-year term.

A process to appoint a new Director General of RTÉ will begin shortly.

The announcement came after an RTÉ Board meeting.

Chair of the RTÉ Board Tom Savage said Mr Goan's decision not to seek an extension of his seven-year term had been accepted with regret.

He said that throughout the seven years, Mr Goan had retained the sensibilities of a programme maker and had always understood that programmes and the audience are what RTÉ is here for.

He said he had left an indelible mark not just on RTÉ but on Irish public service broadcasting as a whole and on behalf of the board and all the staff he thanked him for his exceptional service.

The RTÉ Board will advertise for the position of Director-General within the next few weeks.

Mr Goan has agreed to stay in place until the process to select his successor is completed.
