A new report has found that the number of customers using online banking has risen to 2.2 million.

The IBF/IPSO Online Personal Banking Report says the figures represent an almost 28% increase in the numbers using the facility between 2007 and 2008.

The report says that 800,000 customers signed up in the last two years. That translates to 100,000 new online banking customers for each of the last eight quarters up to the end of 2008.

There has also been a big increase in the number of payments made online, up 31.6% to 30.7 million.

And there has also been a marked rise in the number of times customers accessed their balances online, up over 33% to 123 million.
