Intel has announced an expansion of its research and development facility in the Shannon Free Zone in County Clare.

The chip maker's €50m investment could increase its Shannon workforce by up to 134 over the next four years, bringing the total employment at the facility to 300.

The announcement was made by the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan during a visit to the Intel plant at Shannon this morning.

The investment is being supported by Shannon Development, and its chief executive Vincent Cunnane said the announcement was a further vote of confidence in Shannon at a competitive location for high-tech knowledge-based investment.
