There are fears for the future of jobs at car components company Kostal, which employs 650 people at a plant in Abbeyfeale in Co Limerick and 400 at a second plant at Mallow in Co Cork.

The company is to meet employees at both plants tomorrow morning.

Workers have been on short time since December because of a downturn in business and they only returned to work this week.

Limerick SIPTU representative Karen O'Loughlin said there is concern among workers that the company may be about to announce redundancies, but it is not known how many.

There are also fears that 400 people maybe laid off at the RR Donnelly - formerly known as Banta Global Turnkey - at Raheen in Limerick. It is a sub-supplier of Dell, and is one of a number of companies which will be affected by that company's announcement last week that it is to lay off 1,900 workers. But there has been no confirmation of job cuts by the company.
