Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson has reported a gain in second quarter net earnings but its sales performance fell short of market expectations.

Net profit in the April-June period rose 12.3% from the same period last year to €698m, while sales were up 9.2%.

Ericsson chief executive Carl-Henric Svanvberg described the quarter as 'encouraging'.

He said the Asia Pacific region showed the strongest sales growth, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa were 'softer'.
