French drinks group Pernod Ricard, which owns Irish Distillers, has appointed Societe Generale to advise on the sale of its Irish and British wholesale distribution business BWG.

Pernod Ricard said after its acquisition of Canada's Seagram that it would be selling BWG, which has the Spar franchise in the Republic, to focus on its wine and spirits brands.

Joint managing director Richard Burrows says BWG has generated impressive growth in turnover and profits and has considerable scope for further growth but is no longer a core business.
