JCB founder and inventor dies aged 84

Joseph Cyril Bamford, the man who gave his name to JCBs, has died at the age of 84.

The first famous yellow digger appeared in 1956 and the family-owned company grew to become a multi-million pound business.

Mr Bamford founded the company in 1945 in a rented lock-up garage in Uttoxeter in England. He retired officially in 1975 but kept up a keen interest in all aspects of the business right until his death.
