90 new Belfast software jobs, but losses in Galway and Do

A Dublin-based software company is expanding across the border to create 90 jobs in Northern Ireland, it was announced today.

CardBASE Technologies, a leading supplier of smart card solutions for secure e-commerce, is creating the jobs in Belfast over the next three years as part of a £1.9m investment.

Sir Reg Empey, Northern Ireland minister for enterprise, trade and investment, said the investment would make a significant contribution towards the reshaping of Northern Ireland into a knowledge-based economy.

The Belfast facility, which has already recruited 22 people, will provide research and development resources.

CardBASE has strategic alliances with major corporations such as Visa

International, British Airways, IBM and Baltimore Technologies.

Aonghus Geraghty, founder and president of the company, said Belfast had been an obvious site because the city offered a substantial pool of experienced engineers and programmers.

* 33 workers have been laid off by Galway software company Saville ADC. The company says the cutbacks from the current level of 200 staff are due to a downturn in the US IT industry.

* In Donegal, clothing manufacturer Nena Models is to lay off 43 staff at its plant in Stranorlar.
