A man has appeared before Castlebar District Court to face a number of charges in connection with an incident in Ballina, Co Mayo, earlier this week.

Matusz Batiuk, with an address at Tone House, Tone Street, in Ballina, is charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm as well as possession of an offensive weapon.

He faces a third charge relating to the alleged theft of almost €700.

All charges arise from a series of incidents in the town on Wednesday afternoon and evening, during which the accused allegedly barricaded himself in a property at Market Square.

His solicitor Cathy McDarby made no application for bail.

Mr Batiuk was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court by videolink next week.

At the request of Ms McDarby, Judge Fiona Lydon recommended that the accused receive appropriate medical and psychiatric assessment while in prison.
