A garda is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after undergoing surgery following a road crash in east Cork.

The crash happened shortly before 7pm last night on the Youghal bypass, which has since reopened.

The garda, who was on duty in an unmarked patrol car, is understood to have been dealing with a broken-down car on the roadside when the crash occurred.

He was critically injured when the patrol car was struck by another vehicle.

The driver of the other car was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The garda received emergency treatment at the side of the road before being transferred to Cork University Hospital by ambulance.

He underwent surgery there overnight.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, including any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N25 Youghal bypass, just before the interchange at Clashadonna, between 6.40pm - 7pm yesterday evening.

In particular, gardaí are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the broken down vehicle and the stationary garda car.

Anyone with information should contact Midleton Garda Station 021 462 1550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
